The National Talent Search Scheme is a prestigious scheme under which 1000 talented students studying in class VIII level from all over India are identified and awarded scholarship to pursue their education further. A stipulated number of students appear in the NTSE selection test from each state and UT. It started in 1963 as National Science Talent Search with the purpose of identifying and nurturing the talented students. Over the last four and a half decades the scheme underwent a number of changes. It started with 10 scholarships for pursuing courses in basic sciences only, and presently 1000 scholarships are awarded to talented students throughout the country and is extended to social sciences, engineering and medicine also. It was renamed as National Talent Search Scheme. For a long time the scheme operated at class X level but since 2007 this scheme has been shifted to class VIII. The scholarships are given from class IX till Ph.D. level in social sciences, sciences and till second degree level (Masters) in professional courses like Engineering, Medicine, Management, Law, etc.
Purpose of NTSE:
The basic purpose of NTSE is to test whether a student is capable of carrying out higher order mental processes like problem solving, critical thinking, analysis, interpretation, logical reasoning, identifying, relationships, discriminating, classifying, applying, inferring, judging and predicting.
Forms of Questions:
Multiple Choice Questions often asked in simple form but can also be asked in the variety of ways like matching two or three variables, reasoning and assertion type, true or false statements, etc.

Selection Procedure of NTSE:
FIRST STAGE (State Level Written Exam)
The first stage is conducted by states/UT's .
The written examination at this stage comprises two tests- Mental Ability Test (MAT) and Scholastic Ability Test (SAT).
Each state prepares its own tests and selects a stipulated number of candidates for the second stage.
SECOND STAGE (National Level Written Exam)
The second stage is conducted by NCERT.
The written examination at this stage comprises two tests- Mental Ability Test (MAT) and Scholastic Ability Test (SAT).
About 1500 students who qualify the National level written examination are called for face-to-face interview.
The final award is made on the basis of composite scores obtained in MAT, SAT and the interview.
Why NTSE Preparation:
NTSE is a flagship activity of the NCERT, it is for students studying in VIII. Being NTSE scholar not only secures a child's future but also is something to be very proud of due to various reasons listed below:
It is a national level competition.
NTSE preparation gives students a feel of competitive nature of examinations, where end result is compiled on relative scale and not on absolute scale.
NTSE preparation also gives a child an opportunity to learn vital skills like how to think about a problem or how to apply the learned concept i.e. application skills and also how to attempt a paper in which no pattern is defined yet maximize your score. These skills go long way in making child successful in competitive examinations after class XII.
Only 4000 students are selected out of whole country to compete for the scholarship.
Generally NTSE scholars are able to crack examinations like JEE and AIIMS with relative ease.
